About Our Traceroute Visualizer

This free tool helps network administrators and security researchers visualize network paths with geographic data. Supports standard traceroute, advanced flyingroutes, and MTR output to see the geographic path your packets take across the internet.

Key Features

  • Interactive map visualization of network routes
  • Geographic location data from IPinfo
  • Automatic detection of your IP address as starting point
  • Support for traceroute, flyingroutes, and MTR formats
  • Protocol-specific timing analysis (ICMP, UDP, TCP)
  • Load balancing and alternative path detection
  • Packet loss statistics and timing analysis (MTR)
  • AS (Autonomous System) number display
  • Detailed hop analysis with ISP information
  • Response time visualization with statistics
  • Support for asterisk entries and timeouts

How to use:

  1. Your IP address will be automatically detected and used as the starting point (Hop 0)
  2. Run a traceroute command: traceroute google.com, flyingroutes google.com, or mtr google.com
  3. Copy the entire output and paste it in the text area above
  4. Click "Analyze Route" to see the geographic path visualization
  5. View the results table and interactive map showing your complete network path

Standard traceroute example:

traceroute to google.com (142.250.191.14), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
 1 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 1.234 ms 1.123 ms 1.045 ms
 2 10.0.0.1 (10.0.0.1) 5.678 ms 5.432 ms 5.234 ms
 3 * * *
 4 90.126.109.6 (90.126.109.6) 12.123 ms 12.045 ms 11.987 ms

Flyingroutes example (with protocol breakdown):

Hop 1: 192.168.1.1 (router) - ICMP: 3.36ms, UDP: 6.69ms, TCP: 6.85ms
Hop 2: 96.126.116.1 - ICMP: 18.41ms, UDP: 18.4ms, TCP: 18.48ms
Hop 3: 96.126.116.14 (ec1.cr7-de2.ip4.gtt.net) - UDP: 24.42ms, TCP: 32.17ms
        90.126.109.6 (ec0.cr7-de2.ip4.gtt.net) - UDP: 22.4ms, TCP: 22.19ms

MTR example (with packet loss and timing statistics):

Host Loss% Snt Last Avg Best Wrst StDev
 1. AS??? mybox.com 0.0% 5 2.8 3.8 2.8 6.3 1.4
 2. AS1730 uidps119.opx-trunk29.bb.att.net 0.0% 5 8.6 10.2 8.6 14.5 2.5
 3. AS8902 vlr01lsr01.ok29.bb.att.net 0.0% 5 8.5 9.0 7.8 10.2 0.9

Understanding the Results

The visualization shows each hop in your network path with geographic location data:

  • Hop Numbers: Sequential steps in the network path
  • IP Addresses: Clickable links to IPinfo for detailed information
  • Locations: Geographic location of each hop
  • ISP/AS Numbers: Autonomous System information when available (MTR)
  • Packet Loss: Loss percentage highlighted when above 0% (MTR)
  • Response Times: Average response time (hover for detailed statistics)
  • Alternative Paths: Load-balanced routes shown as sub-entries (flyingroutes)
  • Map Visualization: Interactive map showing the geographic path with alternative routes
  • Protocol Details: ICMP, UDP, and TCP timing information when available
  • Timing Statistics: Best, worst, and standard deviation values (MTR)

Use Cases

This tool is valuable for various network analysis scenarios:

  • Network troubleshooting and latency analysis
  • Security investigations and threat hunting
  • Understanding network infrastructure paths
  • Geographic routing analysis
  • Educational purposes for network learning
